Pollution and Environmental Damage

Go to content

Environmental pollution poses a significant threat to human health and the protection of fundamental rights, as well as to animals, biodiversity, and ecosystems. Since the beginning of environmental law in Europe, extensive regulations have been developed to protect environmental resources and public health from different forms of pollution, including air, noise, odour, light, and electromagnetic pollution, as well as contamination of soil, inland waters, marine, and oceanic environments. Additionally, environmental regulations establish measures to both prevent and repair the damage caused to natural resources by pollutants.

Within the framework of the European Green Deal, the European Union adopted the EU Action Plan: “Towards Zero Pollution for Air, Water and Soil”, setting the goal of achieving a zero-pollution environment by 2050. This plan will guide future strategic and regulatory initiatives of the European Union, promoting a stronger focus on pollution prevention and reduction across all sectoral policies and regulations. In the coming years, both businesses and public authorities will need to adapt to increasingly stringent regulations on pollution prevention. Furthermore, causing environmental damage can result in severe reputational harm, administrative sanctions, and even criminal liability for environmental offences.
